How a request runs: waiting, stopping and background work

Every message or approval is one request. One request runs at a time in each conversation. You can stop it, and approved changes keep going even if you close the page.

4 min

One request per conversation

If you send a message while the previous request is running, it waits up to 15 seconds. On the web, a new message cancels the normal reply in progress. An approved build isn’t canceled.

A message in another conversation doesn’t cancel anything.

Stopping

The stop button works from the moment the thinking indicator shows. Only the person who started the request can stop it.

What you stop
Result
A normal reply
It stops, and the part already written stays
A workspace build
Everything it created is undone
Writing a document
The document goes back to how it was

Running in the background

Approved changes, builds and documents keep going if you close the tab, and you can follow them from another tab. A normal reply stops if your connection drops.

The thinking panel

The thinking steps show for large requests only: a build plan, a document design, or comparisons and breakdowns.

Safe resending

If your app resends the same message after a dropped connection, it isn’t done or charged twice.

If something goes wrong

What you see
Why
What to do
“I am still working on your previous request in this conversation”
A previous request is running.
Wait a little and send again, or open another conversation.
“Your previous request was interrupted before it finished”
A temporary stop on the server.
Check what was done, then send again. An interrupted build is undone.
“This run hit the maximum time and was stopped”
It went past 15 minutes.
Split the request.
“I couldn’t finish answering that within the allowed number of steps”
The request is too broad.
Narrow the request.
“This message was already answered”
The same message was resent.
Nothing to do.

A real example

Shield Security Co.
The situation

The manager approved a large build, then closed his computer.

What they did
  1. He opened the assistant from his phone a few minutes later.
The result

He found the build finished, with its summary in the same conversation.

A made-up company, to show the idea. The numbers are rounded.

Good to know

A request stops after 15 minutes at most.
Up to 40 steps in a default agent request.
Up to 3 requests running at once per person.
